PORT ORCHARD — The Roughriders played well but suffered two tough stretches in the first half in a loss to the Class 4A Wolves.

“We came out strong defensively again, as it was 0-0 several minutes into the game,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said of Thursday’s game.

“After falling down nine after one [quarter], we really settled down and started playing Roughrider basketball.”

But South Kitsap put together a 9-0 run to stretch a five-point lead to 14 and led 34-20 at halftime.

“We made some good adjustments to start the second half, and the boys played their tails off, they stuck together and fought hard all night long,” Ulin said.

“Lambros [Rogers] attacked the hoop really well, and Noah [McGoff] hit three 3-pointers that gave us a spark.

“But SK is a tough team and they got into their press to slow us down midway through the third.

“That was good for us. We made a couple unnecessary turnovers but then we adjusted and did a great job of breaking the press.”

Port Angeles outscored the Wolves by two in the second half, and trimmed the deficit to six in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

“At the end of the day, it is still a loss, but we got better,” Ulin said.

“We have a fight about us that I really like. We are playing with a chip on our shoulder, and now we just have to continue getting better and improving.”

Rogers finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. McGoff added 13 points.

“Luke Angevine had a solid overall game with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals,” Ulin said.

The Riders (1-1) visit Chimacum (0-2) on Thursday.
