GRANITE FALLS — The Port Townsend basketball boys got off to a furious start against Granite Falls, scoring 30 points in the first eight minutes.
That was good enough to carry the Redhawks to a 61-58 victory, though Port Townsend did cool off in the second quarter.
“We came out smoking with five 3s and five good 2s” in the first quarter, said coach Tom Webster.
The Redhawks were up 30-17 after the first quarter but the Tigers managed to get right back in the game as they held Port Townsend to just 7 points, cutting the Port Townsend lead to 37-32 at the half. From that point on, it was a hard-fought game with the Redhawks hanging on in the fourth to pull the game out.
Noa Montoya led the Redhawks with 27 points, 15 rebounds and five steals. Aiden Petta had 11 points, six assists and four blocks, while Lonnie Kenney hit four 3-pointers, scoring 14 points. Kenney also dished out eight assists.
Skyler Zabransky also had a good game with nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Webster said that Port Townsend dressed just seven kids for the game. The Tigers were led by 6-foot-6 post player Sam Sylliaasen, who scored 28 points.
Port Townsend also lost 69-57 on Thursday to Cascade Christian. Montoya led the Redhawks with 25 points while Cascade Christian was led by Parker Johnson with 24. Webster called this game the ‘Battle of the Quarterbacks” as Montoya and Johnson both play quarterback for their schools’ football teams.
The Redhawks (1-1, 3-9) have an important Olympic League 1A Division game at first-place Klahowya (3-0, 7-6) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. If the Redhawks want to win league in their final season in the Olympic League 1A, Wednesday’s game is a must-win for Port Townsend.
