ROCHESTER — The Spartans earned their first Evergreen League victory of the season and first win in more than a month behind the scoring of Colton Raben and Parker Browning.

“It’s a lot funner winning than it is losing,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said following Friday’s game.

“Our kids are jacked up. It’s awesome. For a lot of these kids, it’s their first win in a while.”

Raben topped the Spartans with 27 points and Browning added 23.

Gooding also praised the play of a couple players who didn’t score, Carlos Tejano and Cole Baysinger.

Gooding also said the Spartans’ rebounding and defense were much improved over previous games.

“I can’t say enough about the effort,” Gooding said.

“It’s easy when you lose a bunch of games in a row to just kind of give up, quit, do whatever, but our kids stuck with it.

“They did the little things, blocked out, played defense, help-side defense, and it definitely paid off.”

Forks (1-8, 2-10) hosts Elma (2-5, 2-10) on Tuesday.

“We’re really glad to get a win,” Gooding said. “Hopefully these guys see what it takes to win a game.

“Obviously, we still got a long way to go, but it’s a start. Everything has a start, so hopefully this ignites us into doing something good.”

Olympic 65, Port Angeles 19

BREMERTON — The Trojans scored the first 27 points of the game to put the Roughriders away early.

“Olympic jumped on us early and often,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said following Friday’s game.

“They are extremely athletic, talented and they get after you every foot of the court for every second of the game.”

Olympic (7-0, 11-3) led 21-0 after one quarter and 38-6 at halftime.

“After the first 2-3 minutes, we tried so much one-on-one, and that is not our game,” Ulin said.

“Unfortunately, that led right into their hands, and we turned the ball over and gave them layups.

“We are not a team that can just beat teams going one-on-one. We have to play team basketball. We have to be more fundamental than other teams and we have to play harder than other teams.

“If we don’t do that, we struggle and tonight that was magnified.”

Hunter Hathaway led Port Angeles with eight points.

The Riders (1-6, 4-11) will look to rebound Tuesday when they host North Mason (2-4, 7-7).

Port Angeles defeated the Bulldogs 58-51 last month for its only Olympic League win of the season thus far.

“Our boys got their first much-needed win,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said of Thursday’s game.

Peppard grabbed 11 rebounds and McNeece had 10, while Waldrip and Zach Fletcher grabbed six apiece. Fletcher also had five steals.

“I know our boys were spent as this was our fourth game this week, and traveling to Taholah is quite a road trip,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said after Friday’s game.

“It’s tough when you face a team like this, as they have so many weapons, but our boys played hard. I was really proud of them as they kept their heads up throughout the game.”

Wyatt McNeece led the Loggers with 14 points and KC Spencer added nine.

“Wyatt was a force on the boards and scored 14 points, and KC Spencer continues to be consistent,” Heaward said.
