JOYCE — After winning two games in the final seconds in a North Mason tournament this weekend, the Forks boys on Monday used a stifling defense to jump out to a 16-2 first-quarter lead over Crescent, going on to beat the Loggers 50-28 in a nonleague game Monday.
Forks was led by Jayden Olson’s 14 points, while Oscar Gonzalez and Trey Baysinger each had 10 points.
Crescent was led by Brendan Bergstrom’s 16 points.
“Defensively, I was pretty pleased,” said coach Chris Ferrier. “We had a little bit of an issue giving up second shots.”
Ferrier said his team struggled a bit early with Forks’ swarming defense. “In the first and fourth quarters, we had a problem putting the ball in the hole.” He was happier with the second and third quarters in which Crescent scored 24 points and actually outscored the Spartans 24-23.
“That’s a really good team. That’s a good game for us to get ready for league,” Ferrier said.
“We didn’t shoot lights out, but our defensive pressure and intensity was really high to start the game,” said Forks coach Rick Gooding.
Gooding said Gonzalez and Raymond Davis both played solid in the press. He was also pleased that eight different Spartans scored.
“We’re at our best when we have a lot of guys scoring six to eight points,” Gooding said. “We don’t care who scores, we care how we score.”
Forks, off to an 8-2 nonleague start, has a week off and plays Monday at Onalaska in the Spartans’ final preleague game.
Crescent (2-3), which hadn’t played a game since Dec. 14, plays in the Mount Vernon Christian Holiday Tournament beginning Friday against Mount Vernon Christian and follows with a game Saturday against Rainier Christian.

Sequim boys at Cloud 9 tournament
LYNDEN — The Sequim basketball boys lost a pair of games this weekend at the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic held at Lynden and Lynden Christian high schools.
The Wolves lost 59-44 to Sehome on Saturday despite getting a 27-point performance from Erik Christiansen and 70-50 to Washougal on Friday.
In Saturday’s game, Dallin Despain and Christiansen led the Wolves in scoring with 11 points each. In Saturday’s loss, Hayden Eaton had nine points.
Sequim (2-1, 6-3) has another nonleague game at home at 4 p.m. Friday against 3A Central Kitsap (2-2, 5-3).
