BASEBALL: Wilder wins one, loses one in doubleheader against Lakeside Recovery

ISSAQUAH — Wilder Baseball went halfsies on a doubleheader with Lakeside Recovery.

Lakeside Recovery pitcher A.J. Riley tossed a complete-game shutout in a 9-0 victory in the first game at Issaquah High School.

Wilder bounced back in Sunday’s second game to win 6-4.

“Game 2 was a much better game both offensively and defensively,” Wilder coach Mike Politika said.

The North Olympic Peninsula’s Senior Babe Ruth team was led at the plate in the second game by Tanner Gochnour and Evan Hurn, who were a combined 6 for 6 at the plate.

Gochnour had threes, two of which were doubles, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Hurn also had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs. He scored once.

James Grubb had Wilder’s other two hits. He also scored two runs and stole to bases.

Curan Bradley earned the win with a six-strikeout performance in four innings. Grubb pitched the final three innings and struck out three.

In the first game, Riley, who just completed his junior year at Newport High School, struck out seven batters and held Wilder to three hits.

Riley was sharp, throwing 88 pitches over seven innings. Wilder’s pitchers, meanwhile, were not so sharp.

Starter Travis Paynter walked six and gave up five hits and nine runs in 2 2/3 innings. Tanner Rhodefer threw 2 1/3 innings in which he walked seven batters.

The defense behind Wilder’s pitchers committed five errors, which led to five earned runs.

“Game 1 was full of defensive mistakes and 14 walks,” Politika said.

Gochnour, Grubb and Janson Pederson each had a hit for Wilder in the opener.

On the day, Gochnour was 4 for 6 with two singles, two doubles, one walk, two runs and two RBIs.

Wilder (4-3) hosts a three-team weekend series with Victoria Mariners AAA and Cowlitz/Longview 18U at Civic Field this Saturday and Sunday.
