BASEBALL: Wilder off to hot start

SEATTLE — Wilder Senior improved to 3-0 on its weekend road trip with a 5-2 nonleague win over the Seattle Braves on Friday.

Pitchers Tyler Bowen and Milo Whitman combined to hold the Braves to two runs on six hits in the win.

Wilder plated two runs in the first inning on errors, scored another pair of runs in the third on an Ian Miller two-RBI single to score Ethan Flodstrom and Joel Wood.

Carson Jackson’s RBI double scored Wood in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 5-2.

Wilder finished its weekend with an Area 1 Northwest League American Legion baseball doubleheader against ESC Green and ESC Gold in Auburn late Saturday.

Wilder Sweeps Post 7

BELLINGHAM — Wilder Senior opened a weekend road trip by winning two games of a American Legion baseball doubleheader with Bellingham Post 7 by just three runs total Thursday

“Great start for the boys, 4-0 in league play,” Wilder coach Karl Myers said.

Wilder edged Post 7 6-5 in the opener behind timely hitting from Matt Bainbridge and Ian Miller and some effective pitching by Miller and Brody Merritt.

A four-run fourth got things rolling for Wilder offensively.

“We got it going in the fourth putting the game in motion and putting pressure on them,” said Myers. “We came through for 2 more and that was enough for Miller and Merritt. Post 7 can really hit and I thought both pitchers did a good job limiting damage on some really big swings from them. Matt Bainbridge and Ian Miller had some clutch rbi hits for us which kept us going. Merritt inherited a bases-loaded situation, but he did a great job limiting in the sixth and then slammed the door in the seventh.

Wilder then claimed the nightcap by a 3-1 margin behind six innings on the mound by starting pitcher Ethan Flodstrom and a perfect seventh from Hayden Woods for the save.

“This was just a phenomenal baseball game between two good teams,” Myers said.

“I was proud of how our kids locked in on the back end of a long day to dig out a great team win to sweep the series.”

Myers said pitching and defense dominated the game on both sides.

“Ethan Flodstrom was strong on the mound today going six innings and holding Post 7 to just one run,” Myers said. “Hayden Woods got the save opportunity and shut the door 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

“Offensively, we found a better rhythm at the dish breaking out with 10 hits and putting pressure on Bellingham all game. Tyler Bowen and Joel Wood paced the offense with three hits apiece, but there were a lot of guys executing well in this one, whether it was with the bunt, hit and run or taking extra bases on throws or balls in the dirt.

“Game two was just a very well played game by both teams, [and] a fun way to finish off the double header.”
