PORT ANGELES — After losing a heartbreaking game in 10 innings in the first half of a league doubleheader with Lower Columbia, the Wilder Junior Baseball Club bounced back with a come-from-behind extra-inning 9-6 win in the nightcap.
Wilder Junior lost the first game 14-9 in 10 innings in the team’s first league loss. The boys had a 7-5 lead in the seventh inning, but couldn’t hold it, eventually falling after Lower Columbia broke through for six runs in the 10th to blow the game open.
After that tough loss, Wilder Junior were able to toss it aside and came back strong in the second game. They were behind 6-4 going into the sixth inning, but scored two runs in the sixth to tie it, then tacked on three more in the eighth for the final score.
Timmy Adams and Lucas Jarnigan hit back-to-back doubles in that sixth inning to drive in two runs. In the eighth, Adams and Jarnigan again hit back-to-back doubles as Jarnigan drove in Adams from second base for the second straight at-bat. Jarnigan stole third base and later came in to score. Tanner Lunt, who bunted into a fielder’s choice, stole a base and was able to come in for an insurance run on a groundout.
Wilder had given up six runs in the first five innings, but held Lower Columbia scoreless over the final three innings. Kamron Meadows pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up no hits and no runs while strike out four and walking one, picking up the much-earned victory. The trio of Adams, Nickovich and Meadows combined for 10 strikeouts.
Wyatt Hall led Wilder Junior, going 3 for 5 with an RBI, while Adams and Jarnigan were each 2 for 4 with two doubles and a walk each. Adams scored two runs and drove in one, while Jarnigan scored a run and drove in two.
Kaleb Ripley went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Lunt scored two runs.
The first game was a wild back-and-forth affair with Wilder Junior collecting 16 hits. Lower Columbia at one point had a 4-0 lead, but Wilder Junior came back to make it 7-5 after six innings. Lower Columbia scored two in the top of the seventh to tie it, both teams scored a run in the eighth and Lower Columbia finally took control with its six-run 10th.
It was a tense affair down the stretch. Lower Columbia actually loaded the bases in the eighth inning with only one out, threatening to blow the game open, but Wilder Junior pitcher Seth Woods managed to get a popup and a strikeout to end the threat with only one run allowed. In the bottom of the eighth, Wilder Junior’s Grubb was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run from third base on a ground ball. Wilder was able to knot it up at 8-8 on an error on a dropped third strike to Jarnigan as Hall came in from third.
In the bottom of the ninth, Wilder Junior had runners on first and third in the bottom of the ninth after Lunt and Michael Grubb singled, but they couldn’t get the winning run across.
Finally, Lower Columbia did a lot of damage in the 10th, scoring all six runs with two outs on two Wilder Junior errors, two singles, a walk and a hit batsman.
Adams went 4 for 6 in the game, with two doubles (he had four doubles on the day) and four RBIs, while Lunt was 3 for 6 with a double. Hall was 2 for 4 with four runs scored and two walks, Felton was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI and Jarnigan was 2 for 5 with two doubles (again, he had four doubles on the day), a run scored and a walk. Ripley had a hit and an RBI while Meadows scored two runs.
Tate Gahimer started the game on the mound, going six innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking five. Woods went three innings, giving up six runs, but only one of them was earned.
Wilder Junior is now 6-1 in league, still in first place, and 13-10 overall. They next play Kitsap AA at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Volunteer Field.
