BASEBALL: Wilder Junior opens summer season with four wins in four games

POULSBO — Wilder Junior opened its summer baseball season with four wins in two days over the weekend at Snider Park in Poulsbo.

The 16U team defeated the Puyallup Rattlers 6-1, North Kitsap Red 12-0 and 19-7 and North Kitsap Blue 17-1.

“It was a good start for us we were actually a little rusty,” Wilder Junior coach Rob Merritt said.

“Some of the kids JV [high school] seasons ended three weeks ago, so they were getting back at it. And we only had two or three practices. I felt as the weekend went on we started to gel.”

Timmy Adams opened with a four-inning outing against Puyallup, allowing no runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. He also drove in two at the plate and scored.

Slater Bradley got the save after pitching the final three innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and five stikeouts.

Lucas Jarnagin also drove in two runs and scored in the win.

Ethan Flodstrom had a big weekend for Wilder as the All-Olympic League first-team pick, hit two, two-run home runs. He was 1 for 2 with three runs scored and an RBI against North Kitsap Red, 3 for 5 with three RBIs; two runs and a homer against North Kitsap Blue and scored three runs and drove in three RBIs on a home run and three walks in the weekend-ending win over North Kitsap Red.

Wilder Junior threw nine pitchers in the four games.

Adams and Bradley handled duties in game one. Seth Schofield and Tyler Bowen combined on the five-hit shutout of North Kitsap Red. Brody Merritt struck out 11 in four innings against North Kitsap Blue and Nathan Miller pitched the final two frames.

Lucas Jarnagin, Tanner Walker and Tanner Lunt combined on the win in the 19-7 win over North Kitsap Red.

“We were running on fumes a little bit at the end of the weekend,” Merritt said.

Merritt said other big hitters during the weekend included Michael Grubb, Devin Batchelor, Bowen and Isaiah Getchell.

Wilder Junior and Wilder Senior will each have doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Civic Field against teams from Toyota Baseball Club of Bellevue.

Wilder Junior plays at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Wilder Senior opens its season with games at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
