BASEBALL, SOFTBALL: Riders boys win on 3-hitter, girls sweep

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Colton McGuffey and Kyle Blankenship combined for a three-hitter as the Roughriders stayed within striking range of an Olympic League 2A Division title with a 3-1 win over Kingston.

The win, the Riders’ fifth straight in league, has Port Angeles in second place at 8-2, one game behind 9-1 North Kitsap. The Riders play Bremerton today and Sequim is scheduled to play North Kitsap Tuesday to finish a game suspended in April at a 4-4 tie.

By Tuesday, it’s possible the Riders could be tied for first. The Riders have a two-game lead on Sequim for second place.

In Saturday’s win at Volunteer Field, Ben Basden went 3 for 3 with a triple, a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Tyrus Beckett went 2 for 3 with a triple while Ethan Flodstrom had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

McGuffey pitched four innings, giving up three hits, two walks, an earned run and striking out five. Blankenship pitched three innings, giving up no hits and a walk and striking out two.

Port Angeles (10-5 overall) plays at 3:45 p.m. today at Volunteer Park.

LYNDEN — Playing a couple of tough possible postseason 2A foes on the road, the Roughrider softball girls won a pair, beating Anacortes 15-2 and Lynden 5-0.

Against Anacortes, the Riders got a pair of three-run home runs from Natalie Steinman and Kylee Reid.

Nizhoni Wheeler was the winner in both games, going three innings against Anacortes and six innings against Lynden. She gave up just one hit against Lynden.

Callie Hall pitched two innings against Anacortes and Hope O’Conner pitched an inning against Lynden.

Anacortes is 7-2 in the Northwest 2A League, while Lynden is 6-3. Both teams are 9-6 overall.

Coach Randy Steinman said Anacortes and Lynden are two teams that Port Angeles sees every year in the postseason.

“So, it was a good weekend for us, everyone got to play,” coach Steinman said.

Against Anacortes, Natalie Steinman went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs on her home run, while Reid went 2-4, also with three RBIs on her four-bagger. Brennan Gray was 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Againt Lynden, Gray was 2 for 4, Ashley Howell was 2 for 3, while Lauren Lunt was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Steinman was 1-4 with a double and an RBI.

The wins put Port Angeles at 11-1 overall (8-0 in Olympic League 2A action). The Riders will play North Kitsap at 4:15 p.m. Monday with a chance to lock up an Olympic League 2A Division title with a win.

Port Angeles at Sequim JV Tourney

SEQUIM — The Port Angeles junior varsity softball won a pair at the Sequim JV tournament, beating Olympic 7-2 and Sequim 19-2.

Against Olympic, Peyton Hefton was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits. Madi Roening hit a triple and Aliyah Johnston a double.

In the Sequim game, Kiana Watson was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits. Rose Clark was 4 for 4 with a triple and two doubles. Olivia Nevarill was 3 for 3 with a triple and a double. Aiesha Latourette had two base hits.
