BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Darkness no one’s friend in Sequim’s tie with Vashon

SEQUIM — Sunny Sequim lost to darkness as it does every day of the year.

This time, the dark also defeated a baseball game, one from which Sequim and Vashon were unable to emerge victorious.

Neither the Wolves nor Pirates were able to hold a lead for even a half inning, and before the home half of the ninth, Friday’s nonleague baseball game was called due to darkness with the score tied 8-8.

Sequim’s only lead was 3-2 after a two-run bottom of the second inning, but Vashon plated a run in the top of the third to make it 3-3.

The Pirates added three in the top of the fifth. The Wolves did likewise in the bottom of the fifth.

Vashon scored two more in the top of the sixth, and Sequim scored two in its half of the inning.

Gavin Velarde and Justin Porter each had two hits and two runs for the Wolves. Velarde also stole three bases. Logan Hankinson doubled and drove in two runs, and Daniel Harker doubled and brought in one run.

Sequim’s (4-2, 9-4) next game is Monday against Olympic League 2A leader North Kitsap (5-0, 8-2) at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

QUILCENE — The Rangers took a 9-2 lead and held on in a SeaTac League win against the Eagles.

Quilcene starting pitcher Andy Johnston went five innings, giving up four runs, three of which were earned, on three hits and seven walks while striking out nine.

[He] threw a great game,” Rangers coach Darrin Dotson said. “His pitching reps were higher than I wanted him to go.”

Eli Harrison came on in relief and allowed three runs on two hits and hit a batter while striking out five.

“Once Eli’s arm came up to temperature, the Eagles couldn’t touch him,” Dotson said. Johnston reached base in all four of his at-bats for the Rangers, hitting a triple and a double, leaving him only a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. He had two RBIs.

A.J. Prater was 3 for 4 with a double for Quilcene, while Jarod Smith went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Eighth-grader Holdem Elkins contributed two RBIs for the Rangers.

“It wasn’t a commanding win, but it was a win,” Dotson said.

“It was nice to see my guys play through emotion and not make the same mistakes they made like last year once the emotions took hold.”

Quilcene (2-0, 5-2) hosts Seattle Lutheran (2-3, 2-8) on Monday.

North Kitsap 10, Port Angeles 0

POULSBO — The Roughriders struggled in the field and at the plate in a six-inning loss to the Olympic League 2A-leading Vikings.

Port Angeles managed just four hits and committed five errors in Friday’s defeat.

Two of the errors came consecutively and led to a four-run bottom of the second inning for North Kitsap.

“That second inning was really what hurt us,” Riders coach Vic Reykdal said.

“We gave them extra outs, and that’s something you can’t do with a good team.”

Reykdal said his team had bad luck at the plate.

“We only struck out twice,” Reykdal said.

“We were putting the ball in play but hitting it right at them.

“We did get the bases loaded in the third inning, but we couldn’t get anything going.”

Port Angeles (4-2, 7-3) hosts Port Townsend on Tuesday.

PORT ANGELES —Curan Bradley went a strong 6 1/3 innings on the mound for the Roughriders’ and Travis Paynter closed the door on a potential Trojans comeback.

Bradley allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out 11 in Thursday’s game.

“Curan pitched a dandy of a game,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said.

“They really didn’t touch him until late. They scored in the sixth on a dropped third strike, and then went strikeout, double, double to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh.”

Paynter came on in relief and was aided by the defense of shortstop Luke Angevine.

“Travie gets two strikes on their No. 9 hitter, and then he hits what looks like will be a Texas Leaguer in the 5-6 hole and Luke makes a brilliant stretch to get the catch.”

Paynter picked up a strikeout to end the game.

The Riders did most of their damage in the third inning.

“Our three-run inning we executed to perfection,” Reykdal said.

A bunt by Matt Hendry opened the inning. He advanced to third on a Tanner Gochnour single and scored on an Eathen Boyer RBI single.

Colton McGuffey then brought home Gochnour with a sacrifice bunt.

Port Angeles’ final run of the inning came on a passed ball after Janson Pederson reached base on a squeeze bunt.

“Those three bunts were really the difference in that game,” Reykdal said.

Gochnour later tripled and scored for the Riders.
