BASEBALL: Roughriders rally back past rival Sequim in 7-4 triumph

SEQUIM — Back-to-back doubles by Kody Williams and Jordan Shumway, the latter an RBI shot to center field, lifted Port Angeles past rival Sequim 7-4 in extra innings in the diamond version of the Rainshadow Rumble rivalry on Tuesday.

Williams reached on a one-out double to right, moved ahead to third on a passed ball and scored easily on Shumway’s liner to center off Wolves’ hurler Devyn Dearinger.

The Roughriders continued the inning with a Josiah Gooding walk, and after a Sequim pitching change, Luke Flodstrom rapped an RBI single to left deep enough to score Shumway from second.

Ian Smithson added an RBI single to left to account for Port Angeles’ final tally.

The Wolves had clawed back to tie the game up at 4-all with a pair of runs in the sixth and a score in their final turn at-bat in regulation.

Sequim scored without recording a hit in the seventh, with Zeke Schmadeke earning a one-out walk and Dearinger hit by a pitch. Schmadeke picked up a steal of third base and came home on a wild pitch before Port Angeles reliever Hunter Stratford recorded the inning’s final pair of outs, the last a fly out to left with a runner on first.

Stratford pitched a relatively clean eighth inning, hitting a batter with two outs before fielding the final out on a grounder.

The two teams met again late Wednesday at Civic Field.
