BASEBALL: Pitching, clutch hitting keep Wilder rolling at regionals

QUINCY — James Grubb went six strong innings and received some clutch two-out hitting as Wilder topped the Basin Rockhounds 4-1 in 16-18U Senior Babe Ruth Regional Tournament play on Thursday.

“Pitching and defense is where we are strongest and we are doing both very well so far,” Wilder coach Mike Politika said.

“James pitched very well. He had a few walks that got him into some tight spots but he made the tough pitches when he needed to make them.

“I’m very impressed with his performance.”

Eathen Boyer got things going for Wilder with a two-out single in the second inning.

Grubb followed with a single to move Boyer to second base and Ben Basden’s base hit scored Boyer from second base for a 1-0 Wilder lead.

Wilder added three more in the bottom of the fourth.

Travis Paynter walked with one out and later, Grubb was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.

Basden came through with another RBI single to score pinch runner Tanner Rhodefer.

Anders Chapman followed with a two-run single to bring home Grubb and Basden.

Wilder will face Grays Harbor Longshore today at 6 p.m.
