PORT ANGELES — Olympic loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn’t complete the comeback and fell to the Calgary Longhorns 5-3 at the 14U Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament at Volunteer Field.

Olympic moved to 2-1 on the tournament with Friday’s defeat.

Despite the loss, the Port Angeles-based team only needed to beat winless Riverton, Wyoming late Saturday night to win the American Division pool and a berth in today’s first semifinal at 10 a.m.

The area squad also could advance as the division’s No. 2 seed with a loss because it holds the head-to-head tie-breaker against 2-1 Columbia Basin and 2-1 Helena, Montana. Those teams met late Saturday.

Olympic would play in today’s 1 p.m. semifinal if they fell against Riverton.

A win at 10 a.m. today would put Olympic into the 4 p.m. championship game with a berth in the 14U World Series in Westfield, Mass. Aug. 11-19.

Against Calgary, Olympic’s Lucas Jarnagin started on the mound and struggled.

He allowed two walks and a single to load the bases in the top of the first and walked in a run for 1-0 Calgary lead.

Olympic answered in its half of the inning, as leadoff hitter Ethan Flodstrom continued his strong tournament performance with a leadoff single.

He advanced to second on a ground-ball out and scored on Derek Bowechop’s single to center field.

Jarnagin allowed a single and two walks to load the bases with no outs in the top of the second before being pulled for Tyler Bowen.

Faced with a difficult situation, Bowen walked in a run, hit a batter for another Calgary score and walked a third run in before settling down and retiring nine straight batters.

Olympic pulled within 4-3 on a two-run home run to deep right field by Brody Merritt in the bottom of the third.

Calgary added a run in the top of the fifth when Olympic committed three errors and a wild pitch.

Isaiah Getchell drew a two-out walk for Olympic in the bottom of the seventh, Flodstrom followed with a single and Milo Whitman loaded the bases by reaching on an error.

But Calgary pitcher Aiden Szautner finished off his complete-game victory by striking out Bowechop.
