BASEBALL: Olympic Crosscutters split two games to open Anacortes Wood Bat Tournament

ANACORTES — The Olympic Crosscutters split a pair of games to begin the Anacortes Wood Bat Tournament.

The area American Legion AA team of players from Sequim, Chimacum, Port Angeles and Quilcene opened with a 6-1 win against Lower Columbia on Friday before falling 4-3 to Mount Vernon on Saturday.

The Crosscutters may play one or two games today.

Olympic plays Lake Stevens this afternoon, and will play again later in the day if it is one of the top four seeds.

Against Mount Vernon, the Crosscutters totaled 12 hits but left 11 runners on base in the loss.

Olympic’s A.J. Prater doubled, Nigel Christian singled and both scored on a two-RBI single by Jake Sparks in the third inning.

Mount Vernon took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh after scoring three runs on losing pitcher Logan Shaw.

After two quick outs by the Cutters to open their last at-bat, Sparks singled and moved to third on a double by Daniel Harker.

Sparks scored on a passed ball and Harker moved to third but Bailey Earley flied out to right to close the game.

Olympic and Lower Columbia were tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth when the Cutters pushed across five runners to put the game out of reach.

Earley came through with an RBI double, Harker reached on an error that scored Shaw who had reached base on a single, and Austin Hilliard roped a two-RBI double to right field to cap

the scoring.

Nigel Christian pitched a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks for the Cutters.

Olympic put up four runs apiece in the first and third innings to jump to an insurmountable lead in an 11-1 win over North Kitsap at Civic Field on Thursday.

Tyrus Beckett hit a two-RBI double to left in the first inning to open the scoring.

Earley launched a three-run home run to left field in the third inning to add to the Cutters’ lead.

Eli Harrison and Shaw combined for a two-hitter on the mound.
