BASEBALL: Lefties tag Elks for 16 runs in big win

BEND, Ore. — Port Angeles reached double digits in scoring for the second straight game, pounding out 12 hits, all but two of them singles, in a 16-2 win over the Bend Elks on Tuesday night.

The Lefties have put 26 runs across in opening the three-game series with two big wins (10-4 on Monday).

Tuesday night, Port Angeles’ penchant for getting plunked went into overdrive as the Lefties were hit by pitches nine times.

Designated hitter Kyle Schimpf (Southeastern Louisiana) was hit on three occasions to bring his West Coast League-leading total to five. Schimpf reached base four times in total and scored four runs.

The Lefties led 8-0 after three innings and 16-0 through the top of the fifth inning, tagging Elks starter Grant Larson for eight runs — five earned — on seven hits through 2 2/3 innings.

Dalton Harum (Virginia Tech) hit his first regular season home run, a two-run shot in the top of the third and went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs to bring his batting average to .300 on the season.

Catcher Earl Pace (Southeast Louisiana) went 4 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs and second baseman David Bedgood (Tulane) made his debut for Port Angeles, going 2 for 2 with a double, a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Matthew Dunaway (St. Martins) earned the win for the Lefties, going six innings, and allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Jake Portaro, normally a third baseman, went two innings in relief, striking out three while allowing no hits and two walks.

Port Angeles (3-2) will host their first regular season game of the season against Bellingham at 6:35 p.m. Friday, the first game of a three-game weekend series against the Bells (3-1).
