EDMONTON, Alberta — Port Angeles spotted Edmonton an 11-run lead Wednesday night and nearly fought all the way back in an 11-7 defeat to wrap the Riverhawks’ three-game series sweep of the Lefties.
Lefties starter Jamie Olson only lasted two innings, allowing six earned runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout before giving way to Kole Acker.
Acker didn’t fare much better, allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk with two strike outs in his lone inning of work.
And outfielder Chanz Doughty took his lumps when he gave up three runs on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings.
Port Angeles broke through with a six-run seventh inning.
Aiden Arriaga’s leadoff triple paid off when Mauricio Guardado drove him in with an RBI single.
A Trent Jackson single followed by a Brock Mayer walk loaded the bases, setting up a two-run single by Julio Vasquez.
Travis Helm came through with an RBI double to bring home Mayer and a throwing error on Owen Alsrup’s single scored Vasquez and Helm.
Chanz Doughty singled and advanced around the bases on a Guardado single and a wild pitch, eventually coming home on a Brock Mayer ground out to cut the lead to 11-7.
The Lefties went down in order in the ninth to snuff out any chance at a comeback.
Port Angeles (12-39) hosts Bellingham tonight and Sunday at 1:35 p.m. in the final games of the regular season.
Camp a big hit
More than 45 boys and girls ages 4 to 6-years-old learned some fundamentals of baseball at the T-ball camp hosted by the YMCA of Port Angeles and the Lefties from July 25-27.
“The Lefties couldn’t be more thankful to have the opportunity to work with the YMCA for the T-ball camp. Working with a local business to benefit the community is one of our favorite activities every summer,” said Bree Sheaffer, Lefties assistant general manager.
“Our athletes love to work with the kids, and they act as big brothers on the field teaching them new skills. It was such a great experience and we are looking forward to having more participation next summer,” Sheaffer said.
Over 45 kids practiced basic techniques like batting, catching and running the bases under the guidance of Port Angeles Lefties players.
“T-Ball Camp was a great success! The kids had a blast. A huge thank you to the Lefties for taking this on,” said Charles Alice, YMCA Youth Sports Coordinator.
“I’m looking forward to doing this camp again in the future,” Alice said.
