BASEBALL: Emery’s run lifts Olympic Crosscutters to win in opener

TACOMA – Eric Emery scored on an error with two outs in the seventh inning to cap the Olympic Crosscutters’ come-from-behind 10-9 walk-off win over Kent Bulldogs Elite at Zips Park.

The Bulldogs were the first to rally, scoring seven runs in the top of the seven to flip a 6-2 deficit into a 9-6 lead when the Crosscutters came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning of Wednesday’s baseball game.

Mel Crowley, Logan Shaw and James Thayer each scored to tie the game at 9-9. Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. then hit a hard grounder to shortstop that was misplayed, which allowed Emery to score from third base.

The game, part of the 48-team Edmonds Community College Showcase Tournament, was the season-opener for the Crosscutters.

The team will play again Saturday and Sunday at Edmonds Community College.

Shaw, who plays at Chimacum High School, had three hits, including a double, three runs and three RBIs for Olympic. Crowley, Lane Dotson, Ian Quast and Dane Bradow also had multiple hits.

Crowley, who plays at North Kitsap, and Emery, who attends Crescent, each scored two runs.

Both teams played a two runs apiece in the first inning. The Crosscutters took the lead with a three-run fifth, and added to it with another run in the sixth.

That made it 6-2 heading into the seventh inning, and Olympic seemed to be in good shape.

But then the Bulldogs had six hits and scored seven runs off Andy Johnston and Bradow in their half of the seventh.

Bradow was credited with the victory after finishing the top of the seventh inning.

James Thayer of Sequim started for Olympic and pitched five solid innings, holding the Bulldogs to two runs on two hits and three walks.
