ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Zeke Schmadeke, Sequim baseball, and Brian Guttormsen, Port Angeles baseball

Our athletes of the week this week have helped power the Port Angeles and Sequim baseball teams to a combined 11-1 record through the second half of April, vaulting the Roughriders into first place and the Wolves into playoff position.

Brian Guttormsen of Port Angeles pitched in three victories the past three weeks, allowing just one earned run. He allowed three hits and no earned runs in a big 3-1 win over Bainbridge on April 23 as the Riders knocked the Spartans out of first place.

On April 18, Guttormsen pitched a complete game in a 5-3 win over North Mason. He allowed two hits, no earned runs and struck out seven. On April 9 against Sequim, Guttormsen was an ace again, going 5â…“ innings, allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out six.

Sequim’s Zeke Schmadeke has been doing it at the plate and on the mound for the Wolves. On April 22, he was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in a 9-1 victory over North Mason. He also pitched five innings, allowing three hits and striking out five while allowing no earned runs.

On April 18 against Bremerton, Schmadeke pitched four innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs in a 16-4 victory, while also striking out seven. At the plate, he had a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
