ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Teanna Clark, Port Angeles; Clare Turella, Sequim

Port Angeles and Sequim both crowned state track and field champions this past week.

The Roughriders’ Teanna Clark won the Riders’ first track state title since Millie Long did it in the hurdles, winning the javelin with an amazing throw of 136 feet, 3 inches. It was her best throw by more than two feet and beat the second-place finisher by a whopping 12 feet. Clark’s throw was also the second-best in Port Angeles High School history. She is only 19 inches behind the top throw of 137-10 accomplished by Penny Graves in 1984.

Clark finished third in the javelin last year and is just a junior so she will have a shot at back-to-back championships.

Speaking of back-to-back, Sequim’s Clare Turella won her second straight state championship in the high jump, leaping 5-4 to take first place. It bettered her personal best by an inch and was two inches higher than her state-championship jump in 2024. Turella already held the Sequim school record for girls’ high jump, so she bettered that mark, as well.

Turella is also just a sophomore so more state championships could be in her future, too.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
