ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Taryn Johnson, Sequim soccer, and Aiden Gockerell, Sequim football

Our Athletes of the Week are a pair of Sequim Wolves who had spectacular games last week.

Taryn Johnson, a speedy forward for the Sequim girls soccer team, got off to a hot start this season with a five-goal game in a 6-1 win over Olympic on Sept. 20. She had a hat trick just 27 minutes into the game.

Johnson had six hat tricks last year for the Wolves and scored 24 goals. She is already on pace to challenge that scoring mark after her Olympic performance.

Aiden Gockerell was a workhorse for the Wolves’ football team in their epic come-from-behind 36-32 win over Rainshadow Rumble rival Port Angeles. Gockerell ran the ball 32 times for an astounding 204 yards and just seemed to get stronger as the game went on as the Riders simply had no asnwer to stopping him in the second half. He also scored two touchdowns.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
