ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: State champions Murray Bingham, Millie Long, Jessica Dietzman and Kalli Wiker

We’re doing something unique for Athlete of the Week this week, because it was truly a week of champions on the Olympic Peninsula.

Four individual state champions were crowned from Sequim and Port Angeles High Schools on Saturday, unprecedented in recent history, so we’re honoring all four of them.

First, Sequim’s Murray Bingham won the 800 at the 2A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School with a time of 1 minute, 55.94 seconds. Bingham’s also had a third place in the 1,600 and helped the Sequim 4×400 team finish in third, helping the Sequim boys win the team state championship.

Millie Long of Port Angeles won the girls 300-meter hurdles at that same meet with a time of 44.65 seconds. Long also finished seventh in the 100 hurdles and she was a big part of the Roughriders girls team coming in second in the state.

Topping off the amazing weekend, Sequim’s Jessica Dietzman and Kalli Wiker won the state doubles’ tennis championship at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Dietzman and Wiker’s title also gave the Sequim girls tennis team a team state championship.

Congratulations to all these state champions. Bingham is graduating and off to Southern Virginia University to run track and cross country, but all of these other athletes will be back next year.
