Forks’ Sloan Tumaua accomplished an incredible feat, winning back-to-back state wrestling championships in two different weight classes.
Tumaua was the state champion in 2023 at 220 pounds. This past weekend, he won the state title again at 285, a weight class that required vastly different strategy for a relatively light Tumaua to dominate. His efforts also helped lead the Forks boys wrestling team to back-to-back second-place finishes at the Mat Classic, the best finishes for the Spartans since 2014.
Port Angeles’ Lexie Smith saved the best game of her career for when it mattered most. The Roughriders needed a win last week to qualify for the state 2A tournament and Smith came through with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a 67-37 dismantling of Foster.
Then, in the bidistrict third-place game, Smith added 11 points, including a clutch 3-pointer with 5:55 left in the game, and seven rebounds as the Riders came from behind to beat Enumclaw 44-41. Smith and her teammates play in the regional round of state Saturday against West Valley of Spokane, just one win away from the Yakima SunDome.
