ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Penina Vailolo, Kay Botkin, East Jefferson girls basketball

Penina Vailolo and Kay Botkin both had huge games last week to lead the East Jefferson girls basketball team to two straight wins.

First on Thursday against Sequim, Botkin, the Rivals’ point guard, hit four 3-pointers and scored 19 points to go along with six assists, six rebounds and four steals in a 56-36 victory.

On Friday, Vailolo, the Rivals’ post, scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds, 11 of them on the offensive boards. She shot 12-for-23 for the game and had 18 of her points in the second half in a 58-44 victory over University Prep. Vailolo also had 14 rebounds in the win over Sequim.

It was a particularly tough choice this week as several other Olympic Peninsula basketball players had stellar performances. Honorable mentions go to Brody Pierce of Port Angeles, who had 18 points in a win over East Jefferson, Tyler Swan of Neah Bay, who had 21 points and 21 rebounds in a victory over LaConner and Neah Bay’s Qwaapeys Greene, who poured in 35 points in a win over Mount Vernon Christian.
