ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Jodell Wimberley, Julian Carrick, Neah Bay football

We’re choosing Neah Bay football teammates Jodell Wimberley and Julian Carrick as our co-Athletes of the Week.

Wimberley and Carrick helped lead the way together in the Red Devils’ 66-14 win over Wellpinit in the state 1B playoffs, sending Neah Bay to its first state semifinal appearance since 2016.

Wimberley definitely racked up all the statistics with 326 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for 265 yards on 21 carries and had a 55-yard kickoff return for a touchdown when Wellpinit attempted an onside kick.

Where Carrick and Wimberley shined equally was on defense. Wellpinit relied heavily on quarterback Smokey Abrahamson and its tall receiver Colin Hughes. Carrick and Wimberley broke up several Abrahamson passes and kept the Wellpinit quarterback thoroughly in check, something no team had done previously this season. Wimberley even had an interception.

Neah Bay returns to the field at Mount Tahoma Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday to take on Liberty Christian in the 1B semis.
