ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Clare Turella, Sequim track; Teanna Clark, Port Angeles track

Clare Turella of Sequim and Teanna Clark of Port Angeles are peaking at the perfect time for their track and field teams.

Turella has had a very successful season as a freshman for the Wolves track team. She specializes in the high jump and had won this event four times this season, including at the Olympic League championships. Her best jump of the season was a solid 4 feet, 10 inches.

But then at the bidistrict tournament in Belfair, she shattered her personal record by 5 inches with a leap of 5-3. That didn’t just win the tournament, that is the second-highest girls high jump of the year in the entire state.

Clark, a sophomore, had a similar year. She is specializing in the javelin and had won three times, including at the Olympic League championships.

At bidistrict, in wet and rainy conditions in Belfair, Clark uncorked a spectacular throw of 125-6. That was 13½ feet beyond her previous best. She won the tournament by 11 feet and now owns the No. 1 javelin distance in the state.

Turella’s teammate Ari Skov was also a bidistrict champion in the pole vault.

The state 2A track meet at Mount Tahoma High School begins Friday.
