ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Brianna McGimpsey, Angel Halttunen, Qwaapeys Greene, Alexa Greene, Neah Bay Track and Field

The Neah Bay girls are used to being state champions, having won three straight state championships in basketball.

Well, add two more to this year’s total.

The Neah Bay girls 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams, with the same four girls, won the 1B state championship at Eisenhower High School in Yakima at the end of May. The quartet of Alexa Greene, Qwaapeys Green, Brianna McGimpsey and Angel Halttunen didn’t lose a single race all year. They didn’t have a very good 4×100 prelim in Yakima, coming in fourth, but in the finals, they bounced back, improving their time by more than a full second to shock the field and win it all.

Individually, Halttunen added a sixth-place finish in the 200 and an eighth-place finish in the 100.

All four girls are underclassmen and could very well be looking for back-to-back state track titles in Yakima next year.

Athletes of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
