ATHLETES ELSEWHERE: Sequim graduate Elise Beuke rows at NCAA championships

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — Sequim High School graduate Elise Beuke helped the University of Washington women place fifth at the NCAA rowing championships at Lake Natoma over the weekend.

Beuke, a freshman, rowed the No. 3 position in the Huskies second varsity 8 that placed third in its final Sunday, finishing in 6 minutes, 30.551 seconds.

California won the national title.

TRACK AND FIELD

Barry takes 14th at national meet

BRADENTON, Fla. — Western Washington University’s Alex Barry (Sequim, 2015) finished 14th in the javelin at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships

last week.

Barry’s best throw went 198 feet, 10 inches.

He was the only freshman competing.

Caleb Nieves Velez won the championship with a distance of 249-07, which set a new Puerto Rican national record.

Western Washington junior Brittany Grant (Port Townsend, 2013) placed 20th in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:54.90) and 21st in the 5,000-meter run (18:36.54).

Earlier last month, Barry placed fourth (189-09.75) at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in Monmouth, Ore.

Western Washington Junior Jasmine McMullin (Sequim, 2013) won the GNAC women’s triple jump (38-09.75).

McMullin also was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II All-West Region list.

Grant took third in the 5,000 and fourth in the steeplechase. Her 16:46.17 is the third-fastest 5,000 in school history, and her 10:44.38 in the steeplechase is the fourth-best in school history.

Millsap, Hudson take third in relay

GRESHAM, Ore. — Sophomores Hannah Hudson (Sequim, 2014) and Jolene Millsap (Port Angeles, 2014) helped Olympic College earn a third-place relay finish at the Northwest Athletic Conference championships at Mount Hood Community College last week.

Hudson, Brittany McClay, Millsap and Emily Mills took third in the women’s 4×400-meter relay with a finals time of 4 minutes, 1.83 seconds.

Destiny Dunbar, Mills, Asia Tatum and Millsap placed fourth in the 4×100 relay, finishing in 49.30 seconds.

Millsap also made the finals in the 100 and 200. She placed seventh in the 100 (13.0 seconds) and eighth in the 200 (29.58 seconds).

The Olympic women placed seventh as a team.

Catelli competes at NCAA prelims

LAWRENCE, Kan. — University of Washington senior Frank Catelli (Sequim, 2012) finished his college track and field career with a 28th-place showing in the shot put at the NCAA West Preliminaries last week.

Catelli’s throw of 58 feet, 2 inches wasn’t enough to advance him to the NCAA Division I championships.

Catelli placed sixth in the shot put at the Pac-12 championships with a personal-best throw of 61-06.75. Catelli also took 14th in the discus (161-03).

SOFTBALL

Howell on region first team

BREMERTON — Olympic College freshman Alicia Howell (Port Angeles, 2015) was voted Northwest Athletic Conference West Region softball first-team designated hitter.

Howell batted .372 with 19 runs and 28 RBIs.

BASEBALL

GNAC honors Sullivan

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Western Oregon University senior outfielder Cody Sullivan (Port Angeles, 2011) was named to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference first team.

Sullivan finished the season batting .308 with six home runs, 14 doubles and 27 RBIs.

It’s the second All-GNAC honor for Sullivan, whose season was cut short by injury. He tied for third in the conference in doubles, was sixth in slugging (.579) and 10th in on-base-percentage (.415).

Sullivan also earned GNAC Player of the Week twice this season.
