Tusker Behrenfeld, East Jefferson track and field

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Tucker Behrenfeld, East Jefferson track and field

East Jefferson’s Tusker Behrenfeld has a breathtaking array of skills, ranging from sublime to brute strength.

Not only is he a talented violinist, Behrenfeld has emerged this spring as a huge presence for the East Jefferson track and field team.

At an East Jefferson home meet last week, he managed to win four field events — the shot put, the discus and the javelin. Then he added a first-place finish in the high jump. It’s not often that a person can win both the shot put and the high jump in an event.

Behrenfeld has won the javelin in seven meets this season and the discus three times. His best javelin throw of 163 feet, 7 inches is No. 2 in the state at the 1A level. And it wasn’t a fluke. He’s cracked 159 feet eight times this season. His best discus throw of 122-8 is ranked No. 7 in the state, so look for Behrenfeld to do some damage in district and state track meets coming up later this month.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
