ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Riley Pyeatt, Sequim track and field

Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt had a remarkable day at the Wolves’ home meet Thursday.

Going up against athletes from Port Townsend and Olympic high schools, Pyeatt won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter run. And she ran the anchor leg in helping the Wolves’ 4×200 team take first.

She won the 200 meters in 2½ seconds, a huge gap for such a short race and won the 400 meters by nearly 8 seconds.

Pyeatt, just a freshman, already has racked up eight first-place finishes in her first year running varsity track.

Here’s what makes Pyeatt’s accomplishments even more impressive. In the fall, she ran cross-country, a distance event, and did very well at it, winning one race, finishing in the top 5 six times and finishing 13th at the state 2A cross-country meet.

It’s unusual for any runner to be so accomplished in both distance and sprint events, but Pyeatt has already pulled off the feat as a freshman.
