ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Riley Cowan, Sequim quarterback

Riley Cowan, Sequim quarterback

Riley Cowan had a huge game in the Rainshadow Rumble this weekend.

As the Port Angeles defense keyed on all-league player Gavin Velarde and was determined to deny Sequim any big plays, Cowan took center stage. He was solid and efficient in passing 14 for 19 for 131 yards, with no interceptions and a 23-yard touchdown pass to Kyler Rollness. Then, he added 69 yards on the ground on 16 carries, scoring a one-yard TD on the ground. That’s exactly 200 total yards of offense on 35 plays.

Additionally, Cowan was given the responsibility of calling all the plays at the line himself, rare in high school, looking over the Roughriders defense before calling the play.

Cowan’s play and the victory helped propel the Wolves to a third-place finish in the Olympic League 2A Division and a playoff berth.
