ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Rian Peters, Forks softball

Forks’ Rian Peters had a heck of a doubleheader at the Lower Elwha Billy Whiteshoes fields this weekend.

The Spartans slugger had a three-run home run and a double in her first game and drove in four runs to help Forks beat 3A Seattle Prep 11-1 on Saturday. In her second game against Coupeville, she hit 3 for 4 as Forks defeated the Wolves 8-4 for a sweep on the day to go to 4-3 on the season.

On the day, Peters batted 5 for 8 (.625). She is also an outstanding player for the Spartans basketball squad.

Peters and the Spartans are in probably the toughest 1A softball league in all of Washington as Elma, Hoquiam and Montesano have all battled for the state championship in the past three years, with Montesano winning it all two years ago. Forks isn’t afraid of a challenge, however, as the Spartans took on the defending state champion Lakeside Monday.
