ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Nate Despain, Peninsula Pirates basketball

It’s not easy making the leap from high school basketball, especially from a small school, to college basketball.

It appears Sequim’s Nate Despain is making the transition with flying colors.

The former star point guard for the Wolves had an outstanding game in his first-ever college game for the Peninsula Pirates in a 71-56 win over Grays Harbor.

Despain scored 10 points, going 4-for 6 from the floor and hitting a 3-pointer. He also added three assists, three rebounds and two steals in just 17 minutes on the floor. That’s quite a debut for the local freshman, who added a 3-pointer and 5 points in his second game for the Pirates against Clackamas.
