ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Mirek Skov, Sequim track and field

Sequim’s Mirek Skov is reaching new heights this year.

Literally.

Skov, who specializes in the pole vault for the Sequim track and field team, is putting up some impressive vaults the past few weeks. He has won this event at four meets this year and is getting attention statewide for some of the heights he is posting.

First at an Olympic League meet on Bainbridge Island on March 27, he cleared a height of 13 feet, 6 inches. How good is that? He finished third at the state 2A meet last year with a vault of 13-0.

Then, he topped that height, clearing 14-0 at the Nike South Sound Classic on April 15. That is the No. 1 pole vault at the 2A level statewide so far this year. Going up against athletes from 60 2A, 3A and 4A schools, Skov came in second.

Just to show that his Nike jump wasn’t a fluke, he cleared 13-6 a second time Saturday at the Li’l Norway meet in Poulsbo on Saturday. His pair of 13-6 jumps are second-best in the state, with only his own 14-0 jump better. At this point, Skov has to be considered a serious candidate to win a gold medal at the state championships coming up in May.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
