ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Mia Kirner, Sequim softball

It was a wild weekend for the Sequim softball team, which combined for 28 runs and 28 hits over two games.

Mia Kirner was a big part of the offensive explosion, going 6-for-10 at the plate with two doubles and a home run, raising her season batting average from .240 to .343.

In the Wolves’ Friday game, a 12-5 victory over Bainbridge, Kirner went 2-for-5 with two doubles. She scored a run and drove in another run.

In a wild 19-16 loss on a windy day against Klahowya, Kirner hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the first inning and finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Over two games, she had 11 total bases. Also, playing second base, she has committed just two errors all season.

An honorable mention for Athlete of the Week goes out to Kirner’s teammate and a former AOTW winner, Taylee Rome, who went 6-for-9 in the same two games, raising her season batting average to an amazing .621.

Kirner, Rome and their Wolves’ teammates will be back on the diamond today, hosting Bremerton at 4:15 p.m.
