ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jelissa Julmist, Sequim girls basketball

Going up against a feisty Port Angeles squad that briefly took a lead in the second half against Sequim, and playing without leading scorer Jolene Vaara, who was resting an injured ankle, Jelissa Julmist took control Thursday night against the Roughriders.

Julmist scored 16 points in the second half, including seven straight points at one point. The 6-foot post player even added a perfect 3-point basket during her onslaught. Julmist finished with 18 points for the game to go along with six rebounds and five steals to help lead the Wolves to a 57-46 win over Port Angeles to preserve Sequim’s perfect 14-0 league record.

Julmist is one of the big reasons the Wolves are 18-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 among 2A schools. Sequim has one more regular-season game left, at home tonight versus the No. 1-ranked Neah Bay Red Devils. And then it’s on to a top-3 seed at the District 2/3 tournament beginning on Feb. 14.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
