ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jack Gladfelter, Port Angeles cross country

Port Angeles cross-country runner Jack Gladfelter had a pretty decent start to his career for the Roughriders.

He had six top-10 finishes his freshman year in 2019 and he won a pair of races this spring in a truncated season for his sophomore year.

During his junior year this fall, however, his running career has leaped to a whole new level.

Gladfelter has turned into a dominant runner for the Riders, winning three regular-season meets, coming in second at the Salt Creek Invitational and fourth in the varsity gold category in the prestigious Nike Hole in the Wall race.

To cap it all off, Gladfelter won the Olympic League 2A championship last week. Along with four teammates who all finished among the top 14 runners, Gladfelter also led the Roughrider boys to the league’s team championship.

For his accomplishments, Gladfelter is the Swain’s Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 26.

Gladfelter and his teammates will be running at the West-Central District III 2A race this weekend, looking to do some serious damage and qualify for the first state cross-country meet in two years.
