Garrett Little, Sequim tennis

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Garrett Little, Sequim boys tennis

Sequim’s Garrett Little will have to wait a few months to make noise at the state 2A boys tennis tournament, but based on his performance so far in 2022, he’s apt to make a lot of noise at the University of Washington tennis center.

Little won the West Central 2/3 tennis tournament this weekend in Bremerton. He won his first two matches in straight sets, then moved on in the semifinals due to a forfeit by his opponent, putting him in the championship match against Jack Wang of Sammamish.

This time, Little had to battle to win. He won his first set in a tiebreaker 7-5, lost his second 6-4, but then dominated the third set 6-1 to take the district title.

Little finished third at district last year, then finished third at the state meet held in May. The state boys and girls tennis championships are held in the spring, so Little will have until May 2023 to practise and improve for the state tournament.

Port Angeles’ Reef Gelder, who beat Little for the Olympic 2A League championship, will join his Sequim rival at state as a No. 3 seed out of district.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
