Donovan Heins has been a steady excellent performer all season for the Port Angeles boys track team.
This weekend, he made the leap, literally, from excellent to spectacular.
Heins has been a consistent top-10 finisher in several events, especially the jumping events.
In the long jump, he had four second-place finishes and a first coming in to this weekend’s Olympic League championships.
On Saturday in Poulsbo, Heins uncorked a jump of 22 feet, 2¾ inches, winning the league championship easily by more than 13 inches over his teammate Parker Nickerson. It was Heins’ best jump of the year by nearly a full foot.
Not only did he win the league championship, Heins unleashed the No. 1 long jump in the entire state, besting a jump of 22-1¾ by Isaac Ford of East Valley (Yakima), accomplished back in March.
Look for Heins, Nickerson and the rest of the Port Angeles track and field team to continue to make noise at districts this weekend and at the state meet May 23-25.
