ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Alec Shingleton, Sequim track and field

Alec Shingleton

Alec Shingleton

Everyone expected Sequim’s Murray Bingham and the Sequim boys’ track team to shine at the state 2A track and field championships held in Tacoma late last month.

Bingham won his state title, and he was nearly joined on the championship podium by teammate Alec Shingleton, who deserves much of the credit for the Wolves’ state championship.

Shingleton rose to the occasion in the final prep track meet of his career and had a spectacular weekend.

He came in a solid fifth place in the state in the 800 meters (a race his teammate Bingham won).

Shingleton really came on strong in the 400 meters, picking this race to run a personal best at 50.01 seconds to finish second, just 0.12 seconds off of first place.

Shingleton’s cherry on top came in the 4×400. He ran the first leg and helped the Wolves finish third (Bingham, Logan Laxson and Darren Salazar ran the other legs).

In all, Shingleton contributed 18 out of the Wolves’ 61 points at the state meet.
