ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Abby Kimball, Port Angeles softball

The Port Angeles softball team has been great so far this season.

As good as they’ve been, the Roughriders had a massive challenge last Tuesday, going on the road to play the defending champion North Kitsap Vikings. North Kitsap went 25-0 last year and beat the Riders twice and started out this season 4-0 for a 29-game winning streak over two seasons.

The Riders changed the script, beating the Vikings 7-4.

It was catcher Abby Kimball who set the tone. She hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the Roughriders a 4-0 lead. She finished 3-for-4 on the day.

Now the 10-1 Roughriders are ranked No. 1 in the state in Ratings Percentage Index and Kimball is a huge part of the team’s success, not only batting .393 on the season, but calling the game behind the plate for the Riders’ excellent pitchers Lynzee Reid and Heidi Leitz. Port Angeles returns to action at 4:15 p.m. today at Dry Creek Elementary to face Olympic Peninsula rival Sequim.
