AREA SPORTS: Peninsula products playing basketball for college teams

MCMINVILLE, Ore. — Port Angeles’ Eve Burke recently wrapped a productive freshman season with the Linfield Wildcats women’s basketball team, an NCAA D-III school participating in the Northwest Conference.

Burke is a 2022 Port Angeles High School graduate and last season’s Peninsula Daily News All-Peninsula girls basketball MVP.

Burke totaled 6.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and one steal while appearing in all 25 games for the Wildcats, starting one. She connected on 38 percent of her 3-point attempts (27 of 71) to lead the team.

She was part of a rebuilding season which saw Linfield (10-15) increase its win total by nine games from the 2021-22 season.

Julmist a sophomore

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Sequim’s Jayla Julmist recently wrapped her sophomore season as a reserve post on The Master’s University women’s basketball team.

Julmist posted 3.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and one assist while averaging 14 minutes per game and appearing in 26 of the Mustangs’ 27 games (17-10).

The Master’s saw its season come to a close in the Golden State Athletic Conference (NAIA) quarterfinals. Julmist is a 2021 Sequim High School graduate.

Duo lifting Devils

PASCO — Neah Bay’s Courtney Swan and Port Angeles’ Bailee Larson have been important pieces for the Lower Columbia College Red Devils women’s basketball team this season.

Lower Columbia (19-8) tangles with Walla Walla in the NWAC women’s basketball tournament at 10 a.m. right before Peninsula faces Linn-Benton. The winners will play each other Friday.

Starting in 19 of Lower Columbia’s 27 games, Swan is averaging 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.5 assists per game.

Larson has posted 3.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 steals per game in 24 appearances.

Dunning a Yak

YAKIMA — Wyatt Dunning’s freshman season with the Yakima Valley Yaks, an NWAC East Region squad, recently came to a close.

Dunning, the Peninsula Daily News 2022 All-Peninsula boys basketball MVP for Port Angeles and a 2022 Roughriders grad, was a reserve guard seeing the floor in 24 of the Yaks’ (11-14) 25 games.

In less than 10 minutes of court time per outing, Dunning averaged 2.4 points and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from the field and 31 percent on 3-point tries.
