TUKWILA — A sterling defensive effort by the Peninsula College women’s soccer team left Centralia shotless and scoreless in a 5-0 Pirates win at the NWAC Friendlies on Wednesday at Starfire Athletic Complex.
Goalkeepers Kylie Janke and Kalynn Casanova each spent a half in goal to split the clean sheet.
Desiree Dutra put Peninsula on the board in the sixth minute and Shawna Larson added another score in the 22nd minute for a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Elliana Barden added an insurance goal in the 60th minute, Risa Nishida notched a score in the 70th and Brooke Reiber scored off a Barden assist to round out the goal scoring in the 85th minute.
Peninsula (3-0-0) visits defending NWAC champ Spokane on Sept. 2.
Pirate men win 5-1
TUKWILA — Pau Vivas slotted home two goals to lead the Peninsula men to a 5-1 victory over the Titans at the NWAC Friendlies on Wednesday.
The Pirates were potent during a three-goal, seven-minute stretch of the first half.
Vivas opened with a score in the 10th minute, Tsubasa Abe added a second goal on an assist by Matthew Enriquez in the 14th minute, and Vivas added his second on an assist by Spanish countryman Nil Grau in the 17th.
Peninsula yielded a Tacoma goal in the 54th, but Manny Garcia and Abdurahim Leigh came through with insurance goals to put the game completely out of reach.
The Pirates (2-1-0) host Lane at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Top prospects named
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Lefties alumni B.Y. Choi was slotted No. 14 in a ranking of the West Coast League’s top Major League Baseball prospects released Thursday.
Choi spent 2022 and most of the recently concluded season in Port Angeles.
After starring for the Lefties in 2022, Choi followed up with a breakout season at New Mexico Military Institute that put him on the radar of pro scouts.
Choi was tabbed by the San Diego Padres in the 20th round of the MLB Draft in July and signed a minor league contract.
Nanaimo shortstop Elijah Ickes was picked by team managers as the WCL’s Top Prospect.
Ickes will attend the University of Hawaii.
