Oyster races in Quilcene September 19

QUILCENE — The Quilcene Oyster Races, featuring a half-marathon and 5- and 10-kilometer running events, returns to Quilcene on Sept. 19.

The half-marathon and 10K races are USA Track and Field sanctioned and certified.

A free Kids’ Sprint also is planned.

Prices are $60 for the half-marathon, $40 for the 10K and $30 for the 5K.

Registration ends at 1:59 p.m. Sept. 17.

Registration includes an event-specific finisher medal, a serving of area oysters after the race, one local craft beer for ages 21 and older and an open house for Worthington Mansion.

All proceeds from the races benefit the Quilcene-Brinnon Dollars for Scholars program, which provides scholarships to area high school seniors and college undergraduates, and Count Me In For Quilcene, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the Quilcene community.

The races begin and end at Worthington Park, site of the recently restored Victorian-era Worthington Mansion.

LA PUSH — Coho fishing closed Saturday in Marine Area 3 (La Push) after anglers were estimated to have achieved the 1,430-fish recreational coho quota.

Seahawks trade Witherspoon

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers bolstered their secondary depth on the eve of the regular season, acquiring cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon from Seattle in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft.

Witherspoon spent the first four seasons of his career in San Francisco after being taken in the third round of the 2017 draft. He signed a one-year deal with Seattle in May but now finds himself joining the defending AFC North champions.

Pittsburgh lost valuable slot cornerback Mike Hilton in free agency and cut veteran Steve Nelson in a salary-cap move while re-signing Cam Sutton. The plan was for Sutton to take over for Nelson on the outside, but the inability to find a capable replacement for Hilton has forced Pittsburgh to experiment with moving Sutton into the slot and having James Pierre move outside when the team goes to nickel or dime defensive formations.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Witherspoon had 117 tackles and four interceptions in 47 games with San Francisco from 2017-20. His arrival gives the Steelers more flexibility after Pittsburgh initially kept just four cornerbacks on the 53-man roster.

To make room for Witherspoon, the Steelers released defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux.
