Lefties fall in Alberta

EDMONTON, Alberta — Mauricio Guardado’s three-hit game was for naught for Port Angeles in a 6-1 loss to Edmonton Wednesday at Re/Max Field.

Guardado’s second-inning solo shot gave the Lefties the lead, albeit a short one.

The Riverhawks (17-33) tied it up in the fourth and took over with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by Washington Huskies player Kelly Corl’s two-run double.

Guardado added a double and a single and Port Angeles’ (12-38) leadoff man Corey Jarrell added a pair of hits in the loss.

Garrett Holpuch took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Roughrider grad Kole Acker relieved Holpuch during the big fifth inning and gave up a run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in his 1 2/3 innings on the hill.

Port Angeles returns home tonight for a three-game series with North Division champ Bellingham to close out the season.

Soccer referee training

AGNEW — A soccer referee field clinic is set for the Agnew Soccer Fields from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Youth soccer referees are needed around the North Olympic Peninsula and the state.

All referees must be registered with the U.S. Soccer Federation through the Washington State Referee Committee and complete a two-step process.

First, potential refs must take an online course and pass a test at WAReferees.org. Click on “I want to be a referee” and follow the directions.

The second step is to attend Saturday’s field clinic.

The online course must be completed before attending the clinic.

Once both steps are complete, referees can work around the state and register with the Washington Officials Association, which governs high school officials.
