Cold water immersion

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Paddling Club’s November meeting is set for 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Solana Clubhouse, 135 Solana Pkwy., with a free presentation title “Cold Water Immersion” by Dr. Sam Baker, a retired orthopaedic surgeon.

Water temperatures in the Straits range from 47 degrees in February to 62 degrees in September. Cold water shock causes a rapid increase in heart and blood pressure that can result in cardiac arrest. Human survival time in cold water can vary from seconds to hours, with striking contrasts.

Fellow group member Baker will give facts about cold water immersion and how to protect ourselves to more safely enjoy time on the water.
