Spartans finish strong, score four late goals
FORKS — Forks broke open a close game with four second-half goals, including a hat trick by Mateo Gaspar Lucas, to earn a 5-1 win over Hoquiam in boys soccer action at Spartan Stadium on Thursday.
“We were tied at half. It was a very back-and-forth game between the teams, and in the second half, we really raised our games and made some good pressure on their defense,” coach Ismael Ramos said. “We took advantage of their mistakes, and it worked out in our favor.”
The Spartans also scored on a Luis Ornelas strike.
Forks’ first-half goal was scored by Cruz Fernandez Black.
Ramos said the team’s back line of Orlando Camacho, Brody Owen and Estevan Ramos all worked hard defensively.
Forks (3-3, 3-4) visits Elma (4-2) on Thursday.
“That’s a big one. We can move up into fourth place, which we need to be to make the district tournament,” Ramos said.
Kid’s derby April 12
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers will sponsor another Kids’ Fishing Derby at the Lincoln Park ponds from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Kids from 5 to 14 years old can fish using conventional spin gear with bait and lures. The Kiwanis, Les Schwab, Re/Max Realty and Swain’s General Store are all supporting the event.
The Kiwanis Club will be at the Loomis Cabin serving hot dogs. There will be first- , second- and third-place prizes in five age divisions for the biggest fish caught, which will be awarded immediately after the derby ends at 10:30 a.m.
Prices include quality fishing outfits, rods, accessories and tackle boxes. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and measuring begins at 8:30 a.m.
Boys & Girls golf
SEQUIM — The 34th annual Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula Golf Tournament will be held at The Cedars at Dungeness during the Irrigation Festival on May 9.
A four-person team scramble format event, entry fees are $500 per foursome, $125 for individual golfers and includes green fees, practice range balls, tee prize and golf balls, lunch, cart use and two beverages.
A player package featuring two mulligans, two throws, a raffle ticket and a chance at the Putt for Wine game also are available for $25.
Hole sponsors also are sought.
Prizes will be given out for lowest score for a men’s group, women’s group and a mixed group. Prizes also will be awarded for straightest drive and longest putt.
Check-in will begin at 11 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
The proceeds from the tournament will benefit kids at both the Carroll C. Kendall Unit in Sequim and the Turner Unit in Port Angeles.

Roller derby bout
SEQUIM — The roller derby team the Port Scandalous Scandals will host its first bout of the 2025 season tonight at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club at 400 W. Fir St. against Dockyard Roller Derby of Tacoma.
Tickets are $15 at the door. Children 12 and younger are free.
There will be a raffle, beer garden and snacks as well as merchandise for sale.
