PORT ANGELES — The final in-person registration event for North Olympic Baseball and Softball is set tonight at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This session is for people with questions or needing assistance to register online.
North Olympic Baseball and Softball fields teams for boys ages 4 to 12 and for girls ages 4 to 16.
Boys’ ages for the upcoming season are determined by the age of the player on April 30. Girls’ ages are determined by their age of Dec. 31, 2019.
Players will need to upload a copy of their birth certificate or valid passport onto the North Olympic Baseball and Softball website prior to becoming eligible.
The cost to participate is $35 for T-ball and $50 per player for all levels and baseball and softball with a family maximum of $120.
Skills testing for both baseball players age 8 to 12 and softball players 8 to 16 who have not previously played on a majors team will be held at Peninsula College on Feb. 29 and March 7.
A baseball and softball clinic will be held at Peninsula College from 10 a.m. to noon on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23.

PT skills assessment
PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend Little League will hold a player registration and skills assessment event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the league fields at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St.
The league offers coed T-ball for ages 4 to 7; Minor Prep baseball (pitching machine for ages 5 to 11), Minors (players pitch ages 7 to 11), Majors (ages 9 to 12) and Juniors (12 to 14); and Minors Softball (7 to 12) and Majors Softball (9 to 12).
The skills assessment is not required for T-ball players.

Family discounts are available and scholarships also are offered.

PORT HADLOCK — Registration is open for East Jefferson Little League’s youth T-ball, baseball and softball divisions online at www.ejlittleleague.com.
In-person registration events will be held at the EJLL fields, 80 Elkins Road, at 6 p.m. Feb. 22, 25, 27 and from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 29.
A preseason field cleanup event will be held at the league fields from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and again March 1 if needed.
In-person skill assessments will be held starting at 10 a.m. March 7-8. The skill assessment is not required for T-ball players.

EWU faculty critical
CHENEY — Some faculty members of Eastern Washington University are criticizing the athletic department as a drain on resources and are even suggesting the school drop sports.
But trustees and administrators of the Cheney school said they have no plans to eliminate the athletic department or change its NCAA status.
The Spokesman-Review says a new report prepared by four professors for EWU’s faculty senate contends spending on athletics has no positive impact on enrollment, retention or recruitment of students. The report will be presented to the board of trustees.
Athletic Director Lynn Hickey defended her department, saying that Eastern Washington does nothing extravagant or outrageous with its athletic spending. Hickey did acknowledge that her department spends more money than it raises, but she said few schools turn a profit on athletics.
The athletic department typically spends between $12 million and $14 million a year, with most of that money coming from student fees or university coffers. The report says ticket sales and donations accounted for about 8 percent of athletic spending last year.
