High jumper Turella earns Jr. Olympics slot
SEQUIM — Defending state champion and Sequim High sophomore-to-be Clare Turella took top honors in the high jump at the Junior Olympics Regional in Gresham, Ore., to earn a place at the Junior Olympic Championships, set for Aug. 22-28 in College Station, Texas.
Turella, 16, competing for the Kitsap Fliers Track and Field club, cleared 5 feet, 1-inch in the Junior Olympics Region 13 championships (age 15-16 division), held July 4-7 at Mount Hood Community College, placing first among 21 other jumpers in her age group.
In the Junior Olympics meets leading up to regionals, Turella topped 5-1 to take first at the Washington Track & Field Academy and Alpha Speed Academy Summer Meet in Puyallup on June 8. She then took first place with a 5-3 mark — 6 inches better than the runner-up, a mark that would have topped the field in the 17-18 age group as well, and tying a personal best set during her 2024 high school season — at the USATF Pacific Northwest Meet at Tahoma High School in Tacoma on June 23.
Turella, who won the Class 2A state high jump title in May to become the first Sequim freshman to win a state individual championship, is being coached by club coaches Martha Mendenhall and Ten Gordon.
Wilder Jr. falls 4-3
BURLINGTON — Wilder Junior’s attempt at a seventh-inning rally came up just shy in a 4-3 loss to the Lynden Lightning in an American Legion AA North Division contest Wednesday.
Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, Carston Seibel’s RBI single brought home pinch runner Owen Leitz and moved the tying run to second with one out.
After a fielder’s choice, Lincoln Bear singled to center field but Seibel’s was ousted at home plate in a throw from the outfield.
Bryce DeLeon was the hard-luck loser on the mound, throwing a complete game and allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
Hunter Stratford had two hits and Brandt Perry and Trae Hanan also notched base hits.
EJLL golf tourney
PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Little League will host its third annual golf tournament at Discovery Bay Golf Club on Aug. 17.
The four-person scramble format event will tee off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Registration is $100 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, a burger or hot dog, chips and a soda or water.
The event will include a silent auction. Players can also purchase mulligans and a putting challenge is planned.

Rainiers fundraiser
PORT HADLOCK — East Jefferson Little League are holding a Tacoma Rainier ticket sale fundraiser.
The league will sell tickets for Rainiers baseball games on Saturday and Aug. 3 and will retain $5 from every ticket sold.
