AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Sports trivia night to support football seniors

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Football Boosters are hosting a sports trivia night on Wednesday to raise money for senior scholarships.

The event will be held at Barhop Brewing & Artisan Pizza in Port Angeles. Registration opens at 5 p.m. and sports trivia begins at 6 p.m.

This sports trivia night is all about having fun, friendly competition, and supporting our football players. This event welcomes everyone to compete in the world of sports-themed trivia to win cash and other prizes. There also will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.

Teams should be four to six players. If people don’t have a full team, the boosters club will pair them with other participants. The entry fee for the event is $20 per participant. Cash and other prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

People can enjoy the Barhop sourdough pizza and craft beer while they play. Barhop will donate a portion of the evening’s profits to the football scholarship fund.

All proceeds raised at this event will fund scholarships for graduating football players who will attend college, university or trade school. People can meet Port Angeles football seniors and enjoy some season highlights.

If people have questions, they can call Laura Havens at 360-460-0217.

The PAHS Football Boosters is a nonprofit organization created to provide encouragement and support to the Port Angeles High School football program, improve and expand the football program and facilities and promote the healthy growth of student-athletes.

Fishing derby returns

PORT ANGELES — After three years with no derby due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kids’ Fishing Derby at the Lincoln Park Ponds is returning Saturday, April 8.

The event is sponsored by the Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers and will run from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Kids from 5 to 14 years old can fish using conventional spin gear with bait and lures.

The Kiwanis, Les Schwab, Re/Max Realty and Swain’s General Store are all supporting the event. The Kiwanis Club will be at Loomis Cabin serving hot dogs.

There will be prices for the top three fish caught in five age divisions.

Prizes include quality fishing outfits, rods, accessories, tackle boxes and more. The fish will be planted just prior to the derby and awards will be immediately after 10:30 a.m. Measuring will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Ride the Hurricane

PORT ANGELES — Registration is now open for the Aug. 6 Ride the Hurricane event.

Early registration costs $70. After June 1, any remaining slots or registrations from the waitlist will be $80. The National Park Service restricts the number of cyclists in Olympic National Park at once, so space is limited.

Ride the Hurricane is a demanding hill climb with an elevation profile designed to challenge human conditioning and endurance. The climb begins at the edge of Port Angeles Harbor with a leg-burning, 18-mile, 5,000-foot-high climb to the summit of Hurricane Ridge.

There will be frequent aid stations along the way help to fuel the climb. The ride back down ends where it started — at the Port Angeles City Pier. After the ride, people can join The Party on the Pier, with a taco bar, local craft beer from Barhop Brewery and other refreshments.

Women’s golf club

SEQUIM — The Cedars at Dungeness Women’s 9-hole golf group begins Thursday, April 6. The Lady Niners Club is open to all women golfers. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Cedars at Dungeness pro shop before the start of the first game.

For more information, people can call the Cedars at Dungeness pro shop at 260-683-6344.
