AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Sol Grinder gravel bike ride set Saturday

Volunteers needed; PAHS tennis camp set in July

FORKS — The Sol Grinder, the second gravel bike race in Peninsula Adventure Sports’ Gravel Unravel series, will be conducted Saturday in the Sol Duc area.

Cyclists will be using Forest Service Road 29 [the A Road] as well as 2918, 2920, 2922 and 2923, and crossing the Sol Duc River or tributaries on short- , medium- and long-course routes that all include significant elevation gains.

The 77-mile-long route will gain 9,000 feet in elevation and begin at 8 a.m.

A 55-mile medium course will begin at 8:30 a.m., and riders will gain about 6,000 feet in elevation.

The 35-mile short course will see riders climb about 4,000 feet in elevation.

Volunteers also are sought, including a course marshal and staff for a water station on Forest Service Road No. 29.

A course marshal will be needed at the junction of Forest Service roads No. 29 and No. 2923 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to help direct cyclists at a critical turn.

A water station staffer is needed higher up Forest Service Road No. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The third and final event in the Gravel Unravel series is the Bon Jon Pedal Bender set for June 26 near Quilcene.

July tennis camp

PORT ANGELES — A free tennis camp for boys attending Port Angeles High School will be held July 5-8 by Roughriders head coach Brian Gundersen.

The camp will be held at the high school tennis courts from 10 a.m. to noon daily.

It is open to any returning players or those thinking about playing tennis in the fall.

Players should bring water and comfortable shoes. Racquets will be provided to those in need.
